Yrjö Edelmann, 1941-2016, is one of the contemporary Swedish artists who achieved the greatest international success. His artistic career began as an illustrator at Åhlén & Åkerlund's publishing house. What made Edelmann blossom was the contact with the American photorealists. During this time, Edelmann was greatly inspired by French surrealism, this in combination with photorealism. This would lead to his own hyper-realistic surrealism: crumpled pieces of paper and packages painted so incredibly realistically that one speaks of trompe-l'oeil
