PETER DAHL Peter Christian Dahl was a Swedish painter, graphic artist, sculptor and writer. He was born in Oslo and came to Stockholm during the war years in the 1940s and studied at the Academie Libre in 1957. He was active as a teacher at Gerlesborgsskolan during the 60s and 70s, as well as head teacher in painting at Valand, Gothenburg 1971-73 and professor at the Royal Academy of Arts 1975-79. Dahl paints in an expressive realistic style with clear colors, sensual figure compositions with a critical perspective on the luxury of the upper class and the petty bourgeois environment he himself did not come from. With a Francis Bacon-inspired expressionism, he depicted in a suite of images the course of events in Medelsvensson's daydreams about "the sweet life" in social group one. Over the years, Peter Dahl has continued with theme painting. 1981-1984 he illustrated Fredman's Epistles in 87 pictures. He is outgoing and likes to describe his own life with sprinkles of self-irony. There is a Swedish tradition in his painting, he likes to take up the old and renew it. In recent times, his style became softer and more sensual, his dance and bacchanal motifs took on Rococo features. As a graphic artist, Dahl has become famous especially for his congenial illustrations for Bellman's "Fredman's Epistles". Peter Dahl is one of the truly great artists of our time, enormously productive and constantly popular.
